World Timepiece Box

The box was designed bespoke for a client to display and wind an extremely rare 24k gold Art Deco Patek Philippe ‘World Time’ wristwatch. The Macassar ebony, Santos Rosewood and 24-carat hard gold plate watch winder are inspired by the watch’s globe theme whereby each face of the box has a different continent of the world and longitude and latitude lines expressed in 'micro' satinwood marquetry.

The design is biometrically opened using fingerprint recognition to reveal its secret: the box is a sphere within a cube shape. The craftsmanship required to achieve the sphere within a flat surface takes veneering and craftsmanship and gloss finishing to new levels.

The mock-up stage of the making process, with hand drawn lines working out the abstract coastline which flows over each face of the watch box.
