Reverie: Form, Material and Light
Unveiled in London in October, Reverie is Studio SL's second limited edition collection. Bringing together a chair, a side table, a chandelier and a wall light, it explores the expressive possibilities of Douglas fir and leather through four distinctive sculptural forms. The collection also introduces lighting to the studio's practice, developed in collaboration with the Italian lighting studio Luce5.
Conceived by the Studio SL design collective and realised in Silverlining's North Wales workshop, Reverie draws on a close relationship between design and making. The landscape surrounding the workshop provides a point of reference, both in the contours of the pieces and in the use of locally felled timber. Their Welsh names acknowledge this connection to place.

The expression of materials
Douglas fir and burgundy coach-hide leather establish the collection's material language. Grain, texture and folds become integral to the design, inviting attention to the way each surface has been worked.
In the Dôl Chair, the timber retains a pronounced physical presence. Carved from locally felled Douglas fir, its rugged lower surfaces gradually soften towards a smooth armrest. Inspired by the contours of the Dee Valley, the chair brings contrasting textures into a single form.

The Dolen Side Table explores a different relationship between these materials. Its continuous form connects surface and base, with Douglas fir veneer on the exterior and burgundy leather lining the inner face. The contrast draws the eye around and into the piece, revealing an interior given the same care as its outer silhouette.

Throughout Reverie, craftsmanship serves this attention to form. Each material presents its own possibilities and constraints, requiring the designers and craftspeople to work closely as an idea takes shape.
Leather brought into light
The Awen Chandelier extends this exploration to an architectural scale. Spanning 1.5 metres, it combines folded burgundy leather, Douglas fir veneer and blown glass. Its development required the leather to retain a sense of fluidity while holding a precisely resolved shape.
Created with Luce5, Awen introduces a new dimension to the studio's work: light becomes part of the composition, changing how its materials and folds are perceived.

The Troell Sconce offers a more intimate expression of the same enquiry. Leather curves around a central light source, while two sculpted art glass panels direct and subtly distort the light into ribbon-like patterns across the leather and surrounding wall. Its presence extends beyond the object itself, drawing the architecture into the design.

Reverie opens a new chapter for Studio SL, extending its exploration of materials into lighting while retaining the intimacy of objects worked by hand. Across the collection, sculptural ambition is grounded in how each piece will be used and experienced, from the smooth surface of an armrest to the fall of light across a wall.
